One of the original Fabrication Team members is parting ways with the Digital Corps. Apprentice Alexandria Clark has helped shape the lab in its early years at the Corps.
Because she was thrown into the fire on a brand-new team, she had to learn a lot, and quickly.
“I really like to watch someone who knows what they’re doing and then copy them on my own, I can be pretty stubborn so usually I’ll try a few times on my own and then go back if I need more help.”
For projects like the College of Health Donor Tree, it was all hands-on deck at the lab. Alexandria, team lead Andrew Arthur, and their other talented lab teammates divided and conquered 3D printing and laser cutting beautiful leaves for a donor display.
“It was a big workload, but I really just wanted to support the team in every way I could.”
While Alexandria had a huge feeling of accomplishment after that big project, she loves the internal smaller projects that allow her to connect more personally with the designs and the people benefiting from them. Her patience and persistence are what makes her such a valuable asset to our team and to her program. Alexandria hasn’t had the typical college experience. After four years in the military she decided she was ready for something new. But she couldn’t get the images of barracks and housing out of her head. To her, they weren’t serving the purpose she wanted. So, she came to Ball State to pursue a degree in Interior Design.
Through her program she’s been able to learn new aspects of design she’d never thought she’d learn. And through her work at the Corps, she’s able to apply a whole new sector of knowledge to her field:
“Meeting with Graphic Design students helps me see how interesting their work is and makes me think about how I can incorporate it into my major. I think it has opened my mind and my eyes on how to do certain things differently.”
Alexandria also likes to open up to other creative outlets. Over the past two years she’s taken up crocheting as her primary craft.
“I wouldn’t say I’m top tier; I’ve made dish scrubbers and little things. I really want to make a blanket for my friend’s baby. I just love doing stuff with my hands.”
Alexandria always brings a kind voice and a genuine smile to the office. Over almost two years at the Digital Corps she’s not only excelled on her projects she’s helped shape an entire team as one of its original members. The Fabrication Lab and the rest of the Digital Corps will miss her but she will continue to carry her kindness, creativity and patience as she moves on to her next great adventure.
